What the checker looks at
- Behaviour evidence: for each of the nine Civil Service behaviours, whether your CV shows clear, some or no evidence, judged against the official expectations for your target grade. It also shows how often live adverts at that level assess each one.
- Official CV guidance: measurable results, achievements rather than duties, clear language, and length.
- Anonymised-sift readiness: personal details such as date of birth, age, nationality or full address that a CV doesn't need.
It doesn't give you a pass mark or predict whether you'll be shortlisted. Applications are assessed against each advert's own criteria. The free check never writes anything for you: the advice is fixed guidance.
If you want help with a gap, Strengthen this (50p per behaviour, paid from prepaid credit) asks you about a real example from your own experience, then organises your answers into a STAR outline and CV bullet points. It uses only what you tell us, shows which of your words each part came from, and flags anything to check. You edit it and put it in your own words.

Writing a CV for a Civil Service job
Official guidance from Civil Service Careers and GOV.UK says:
- Your skills and experience are scored against the essential criteria in the job advert, so keep everything relevant and tailor it to the role.
- Your work history can include paid work, volunteering, and school or college work experience.
- Include specific facts and figures that show the results of your work.
- Don't assume the reader knows your situation: make clear what you did.
- You may be asked for an anonymised CV, without details that could identify you such as your name, age or gender, and to include only qualifications relevant to the role.
- There's no set way to present a CV and no official template. One department suggests aiming for 1 to 2 pages.
AI tools may be used to check spelling, grammar and clarity, but not to invent or inflate your experience. See personal statements for the full rules.
Your privacy
Your CV is read in memory to produce the check, then discarded. Before it's analysed, your name, contact details, address and similar details are removed. Results stay in your browser. There's a limit on how many checks you can run each hour, to keep the service free for everyone. See our Privacy Policy.
